“This is going to be really hard isn’t it?” I asked him quietly. I tried to keep my voice level so that he couldn’t tell I was crying.

“It doesn’t have to be hard,” he paused. “Are you crying?”

“Yes,” I admitted feeling a little ashamed.

“Ohh, Allie. Please don’t cry. I promise you that everything will work out.”

“I know in my mind everything will work out. But my heart doesn’t have the same feelings. My heart wants so much more than it possibly can get right now.”

“I want to give your heart every single want a desire it could ever possibly have. But I can’t do that right now.”

“I know you can’t,”

“You know what?”

“What?”

“I can do something for you right now.”

“What’s that?”

“I can make you a promise.”

“What kind of promise?”

“A simple promise,”

“Ok, what are you promising me?”

“You haven’t been kissed yet?”

“No,”

“Well that’s my first promise.”

“To be my first kiss?”

“I doubt I’ll be your first kiss. But I promise you that one day we’ll have our first kiss. No matter how old we are, no matter how long we’ve been apart. I promise to kiss you. Even if we’re forty years old I’ll still give you a kiss like we’re sixteen. If we’re eighty years old and can barely see, I’ll still kiss you. No matter what I will kiss you. ”

“I like that promise.”

“Good, I have many more things to promise you.”

“But I don’t need any other promises. That one is enough for me.”

“It may be good enough for you. But it’s not for me. I’m going to promise you the moon, the stars and the sun. Anything you could ever want I’ll promise you.”

“Ohh Alex,” I said as I started to cry. I heard a light knock at the door and I saw Tori standing in the doorway. I gave her a half hearted smile and she shut the door behind her and came over and sat down on the bed beside me. She didn’t bother to ask who I was talking to and she didn’t say a word. She just sat there quietly and listened while I talked to Alex.

“Allie, please, I’m begging you don’t cry. Everything will be all right. I promise.”

“You make so many promises. What if you can’t keep all of them?”

“Allie, I never make a promise I don’t plan to do my best to keep. Sometimes promises are hard to keep. But I’d never promise you anything that I would never make happen at some point.”

“You promise you’ll never a break a promise to me?”

“Yes, I promise to never break any promise I make you.”

“I love you so much Alex.” I whispered and I felt Tori put her arm around me.

“I love you too Allie. More than anything in this whole world,”

“I have a promise to make you too,”

“Ok,”

“I promise to love you no matter what. I promise to love you forever and for the rest of my life. Even if I ever meet another guy who makes me feel even half of what I do for you it still won’t be enough to change how I feel about you. You’re the only person I want.”

“If you ever find another guy that you love, even if it’s more than me. I promise that it’s ok. You won’t hurt me if you love him more than me or you want to be with him.”

“No matter what, I swear I could never love anyone as much as I love you.”

“It feels the same way for me,” he said quietly.

“Tori is here,”

“You better go talk to her then. I’ll call you tomorrow. Ok?”

“Ok,”

“Bye Allie,”

“Bye Alex,”

“I love you,”

“I love you too,” I hung up the phone and set it down on the bed.
